News Update 1  (12/23/2016)

Smashboard  (Keyboard)

While we do expect most of our players to use a gamecube controller or an Xbox 360 controller, we do want to make the playing field as even as possible for those who prefer to use the keyboard.

The biggest Issue that we came across when trying to keep the keyboard on par with a controller was trying to simulate analog controls on digital key presses.

As you can see, a joystick has sensitivity, allowing for walking, tilts, and specific angles for specific attacks and specials. A keyboard key doesnt have this advantage. So the real problem came from trying to emulate this type of control on a keyboard. After seeing the hitbox's SmashBox controller, we finally have found a way to emulate such control, despite having digital keys.

Take  a look at the layouts below.

If you notice on the top right, You see keys that are labeled as X1, X2, Y1, and Y2. Now these function as modifiers for your analog stick.

Simply put, if press only left or right, your button presses will function as a joystick fully being held to the left or right. Now if you hold X1 and press either left or right, instead of fuctioning as a full press to the left or right, it will instead function as a small tilt to the left/right. Same with X2, only a little further. And the same with X3 as well.

I know that in the image above, there is not an X3 button. To activate the X3 axis, you would need to press X1 and X2 at the same time.

Here is a chart below showing the X1, X2, and X3 emulation.

The Y modifiers functions the same as the X modifiers. With these modifiers, the keyboard has seen a huge improvement. Now being able to tilt, walk, smash, and even hit specific angles with specific attacks.

Here is a before and after on angles using the x and y modifiers.

Thats all for todays update. Thank you all for reading. You have a great rest of your day :)
